How to identify your first value stream

Organizations frequently overcomplicate value stream identification. The objective is not to redesign the enterprise immediately. The objective is to understand one critical flow of value. The best starting point is selecting:

  • a strategic customer journey
  • a high-friction delivery process
  • a business-critical capability

Examples include:

  • onboarding a customer
  • delivering a digital feature
  • resolving a customer issue
  • processing a loan
  • launching a product

Once selected, map:

  • where work starts
  • where work waits
  • where approvals occur
  • where ownership changes
  • where dependencies slow movement

Do not begin with systems or reporting structures.Begin with movement. Most organizations discover:

  • excessive handovers
  • duplicate governance
  • fragmented accountability
  • hidden waiting time

The purpose of value stream identification is not documentation. It is exposing how the system behaves in reality.Because improvement begins when flow becomes visible
